I completely agree with your post about how you can’t cure being gay amd how it’s wrong to try. BUT the clinic is a christian clinic, so you can’t expect them to act like being gay is normal because to a lot of christian people it’s not (even though everyone here on your blog knows it is normal, including me). But a petition isn’t going to shut the clinic down because the state and federal government cannot involve themselves saying christian people are wrong because that would violate the first amendment. In the first amendment it states that the government cannot declare a religion, and to make laws against just one religion is saying that religion is wrong and the government can’t do that. Now, if Jewish clinics and Christian clinics and clinics that don’t have a declared religion, were trying to convert gays straight, and if it was a serious enough issue effecting tons of people, then yeah a petition would help. But with one Christian clinic caught doing this, no one can step in because the government can’t stop them and there isn’t anything anyone can do. Again I completely agree with you and how it’s not right and that we should spend more time trying to convert people to accepting gays and lesbians and such, but a petition won’t do anything. And in no way was I trying to sound like a bitch in this so I’m sorry if I did.

Standard

You don’t sound like a bitch at all and you are certainly, certainly entitled to your opinion. However, please read the terms of the petition. It is not to shut the clinic down, it is to re-examine how federal funding is being applied to this clinic.

While I personally want it shut down, you are right that the government cannot step in. However, with this separation between church and state holding true, the government should not be giving money to carry out what you have clarified to be a religious agenda.

The issue here is that federal funds are going to something that has been declared to be an out-dated and harmful process by federally-supported organizations. Therefore, if they wish to continue these practices, they should not be carrying them out with the help of federal funds.

Do I want the clinic shut down? As a Christian and as a human rights supporter, hell yeah. But is that the purpose of this petition? No. This is not a First Amendment issue at all, it is an issue of improper use of federal funding.
