Treating me like a resource first and a person second is an easy way to get pushed away. Gotta protect my energy.

“Racist are inherently intellectual cowards.”

as black women, too often we have to pick a side: ratchet or bougie, relaxed or natural, nicki minaj or lauryn hill. we’re assigned into these categories before we even open our mouths so it’s very important to me to exist at different points on each of these spectrum. i want to twerk and turn up at the club on saturday and host book clubs at my house on sunday. i own the right to do that. and if i want to sew a weave into my natural hair then so be it. you don’t decide who i am. i do.

the reason oppressed groups say “___ are awful” instead of “some ___ are awful” is because including the word “some” allows individuals of that group to detach themselves from the problem and shuck the blame off and say “well they arent really talking about me so i can ignore their opinions”, whereas stating that an entire group of oppressors is awful makes the individual think whether or not theyre included in the awfulness of that group and makes them consider their actions so thats why people say “men are awful” or “white people are awful” and if you take it personally you’re getting angry at the wrong people
#if you take it personally you’re probably part of the problem
for real though, internet english is STAGGERINGLY multi-modal. the problem with communicating via writing is that you lose certain dimensions of spoken conversation, like intonation, facial expression, body language, pauses and fillers etc, but there’s been so many linguistic innovations to maintain richness in communication, like
- emojis/emoticons
- use of capslock and purposefully creating/not fixing typos to convey excitement, or likewise not capitalizing anything
- use of punctuation (or lack thereof) to indicate /emphasis/ or ~irony~ or apathy
- reaction images and memes
- use of familiar songs in tumblr text posts or vines etc
- variational spellings like you/u or true/tru
- bolding, italics, strikethrough, font size, line breaks, etc
- (using parentheses to whisper)
- tags as commentary, also the body of commonly used/commonly mocked hashtags
like i could go ON and ON about the things that internet language users have created to get around the difficulties of non-verbal communication, like ??? what other dialects can do all that and change that much in 30 years????
