Queens of Television

No disrespect (though many will take it as such), but why are these “Queens” a side chick, an ex – convict, and well…I have yet to decide what Viola Davis’ character is (besides bad ass!)

…as if the only way to be a queen is to fall into pre-determined boundaries of being respectable? They’re not running a damn country, this is television. We finally get three black female leads who are nuanced, messy, and complicated but you think they should be presented in ways you deem acceptable?  How many white male anti-heroes have to do the same? I’ve never heard anyone critique Breaking Bad like “well I guess they brought in a lot of ratings and people loved them, but did you forget they sold meth??”

It’s just hilarious to me that black female leads are always burdened with the responsibility of being role models but no one bats an eye when white characters commit crimes or are rough around the edges. And this comment is double trash for that little disclaimer you prefaced it with. Knowing damn well you were saying something out of line, but you tried to make it seem as if anybody who contradicts you is overreacting or misinterpreting your words. Nah, I heard you and your thinly-veiled misogynoir. You’ve been seent. Next time don’t think you can come up on an uplifting post about black women with a “…but…” Don’t do it.
