What I don’t mean:
- All cis people are the same amount/kind of transphobic
- all cis people yell slurs at trans people and murder them
- all cis people are automatically horrible people
- cis people can’t know/be friends with/have significant relationships with trans people
- I’m just gonna be a dick to cis people cause why not! It’s fun!
What I mean:
- Society ingrains transphobic beliefs into everyone. Literally everyone grows up being transphobic, including trans people, and must unlearn it if we hope to make society better for trans people.
- it is easier for trans people to unlearn transphobia because they go through it, but pretty much all of us still have internalized stuff.
- it’s harder for cis people to unlearn transphobia because they benefit from it and do not go through it
- cis people cannot be experts on trans issues because they don’t experience transphobia
- if cis people want to be good allies, they have to listen to us, because we understand transphobia much better than they do
