I wonder what magical alternative universe version of the US people live in. The ones who say things like “well you’re not supposed to live on a minimum wage job anyway! just get a real job!”
Minimum wage is supposed to be a living wage. Like. I don’t. What?
And it’s just, look at unemployment rates, look at cost of college, look at the average debt people graduate with, how can that possibly be a reasonable thing to say to you? I look around, and 2/3 of the people my age are either struggling to stay enrolled, facing unemployment with 10k+ in student loans, or have had to move back home to help their families financially.
So, really, that’s what you’re going to say to those people? “I know you already work a full time job, or maybe only part time because you also go to school full time. I know tuition isn’t even almost something you can afford without going tens of thousands of dollars into debt. I know that you and a staggering number of other people your age will not have jobs to go to after you graduate. I know higher education just isn’t an option for many people. I know most minimum wage workers are adults with families to support. I know, I know. But have you considered just getting a real job?”
